Fun fact: My family is from Minnesota. Lovely place. Snowy winters, mild summers. And there are Orange Julius stores, where they sell the most incredible creamy orange smoothie you will ever taste in your entire life.
When we moved down to North Carolina, my mom found a recipe for an Orange Julius, and it became an instant favorite for family movie nights.
So today I am sharing with you a recipe that is dear to my heart---with some changes to make it sugar and dairy free and still delicious.
Once you have obtained a few simple ingredients--like a frozen orange--it's as simple as sticking everything in the blender and pushing "start".
This version is dairy free and very low sugar. I'd say it's a justifiable midday snack.
It's not very often a dairy-free person gets to enjoy a creamy smoothie. For me, this is certainly a treat.
Paleo Orange Julius
- 1 orange
- 2 T orange juice concentrate
- 1 1/2 cups almond milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 T agave or maple syrup
Peel and slice up the orange, stick it in a plastic baggie, and place it in your freezer for 6+ hours. (Tip: make sure you cut off as much of the white stuff as possible--it might make for a strange flavor/texture in your smoothie)
Place all ingredients, including the frozen orange slices, in a blender and blend on high for a few seconds. You really want the pulp of the orange to be blended to death. Add some ice cubes if you want your smoothie thicker.
